The propshaft joint is the flexible rubber disc bolted between the propshaft and the flange of the gearbox or differential. Steel bushes bonded into the rubber take the bolts, alternately from the shaft side and the flange side. In trade catalogues it is listed as “Joint, propshaft”.
The disc transmits the drive torque and at the same time cushions it: it absorbs the shock of pulling away and changing gear, tolerates small angles between the shafts and keeps driveline vibration from travelling through the car.
A joint disc that is cracked around the bushes or has started to separate causes a knock when drive is taken up and vibration that rises with road speed. It is replaced, not repaired.
