The intake hose carries filtered air from the air filter housing to the throttle body or, on a turbocharged engine, to the turbocharger inlet. On most engines it sits after the air flow sensor, so the air it carries has already been measured.
Because the engine moves on its mountings, the intake hose has a flexible corrugated section. That is also where it fails: the folds crack with age and heat, unmetered air enters the engine and the result is rough running, hesitation or a fault code for the mixture.
