The axle beam bushing mounts the rear axle beam, or the rear subframe, to the body. It is a large rubber-metal bush: the whole rear axle pivots on a pair of them.
The bushing locates the axle, so its condition decides how the rear of the car follows the front. It also keeps road shock and tyre noise out of the body.
A worn axle beam bushing lets the axle move: the rear feels loose or steers by itself over bumps, knocks are heard from the back and the rear tyres can wear unevenly.
